GRAPHIC DESIGN FOR LIBRARIANS

Hello — I’m Christian Benavides, a library assistant and MLIS student with a passion for visual storytelling in libraries. This portfolio was created for INFO 246: Graphic Design for Librarians, a course that encouraged me to experiment with new tools and design approaches. This collection highlights my approach to connecting people to culture, creativity, and community through design. Each piece reflects the welcoming and inclusive spirit of library spaces by promoting programs, celebrating tradition, and reimagining everyday moments with a personal touch.

Books & Brew: The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
A promotional Instagram graphic for a horror-themed book club. I blended black-and-white imagery of a Mexican town and a New England school to evoke the novel’s dual timelines and dark academia tone. Created in Canva using layered paper textures and collage elements to achieve a vintage, research-notes aesthetic.

Day of the Dead: Nicho Craft Workshop
A flyer design celebrating Día de los Muertos through color and typography. I paired Obcecada Serif and Nadira to balance structure with warmth, reflecting both the formality and handmade spirit of nicho box making. The design aims to feel like a welcoming invitation to a family-centered celebration of memory and creativity.

Seongaksan Coffee
A zine-inspired poster created by manipulating original photos taken in Jeju Island. Using Canva’s halftone and linocut effects, I layered images of a latte and the Seongaksan Trail to evoke the tactile quality of risograph prints. The design blends travel and everyday ritual, reflecting how personal experience can inform visual storytelling.
